Brexit: the sound a racist hemmorhoid makes.
Maybe, maybe not, but surely a rabid sense if nationalism did play an outsized role in Brexit, the 2016 US elections, the growth of the neo-nazi NDP in Germany, the explosion of religions nationalism in Poland, the rise of Fidesz and Orban in Hungary, among other oddly comical social expressions of nationalism. Are they racist? Mostly, and they tend to align closely with a loose christian association. Yeah, the KKK as an example espouses "Judeo-Christian values" while being pretty much anti anything "Judeo." Why do these fools hate Jews so much anyway? Wouldn't that negate their so-called christian lifestyle?
Wasn't the Jesus they so warmly speak of not a Jew? The only thing more two-faced than overt nationalism and fascism is, if course, racism. It simply doesn't make much sense, and is by default, absolutely senseless. As is tribalism of every creed. Tribalism was especially deviously applied in principle by the colonial British empire, with far reaching effects. A good example is the partition of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, which are essentially comprised of the same people divided along an imaginary religious line. These are folk who had coexisted in some semblance of peace prior to colonialism but were granted a state of perpetual tension following the departure of the British from the Indian subcontinent.
Africa? Same story, and it affects real economic and political advancement to date. Ironically, Brexit was tribal too, the final thrashing of the conservative limb versus the progressive liberalism of the under 45s. Of course the younger generation is quite loud on social media but utterly toothless because they tend to exhibit extreme voter apathy. It's a similar tale in the US, of course. Well, by losing the collective bargaining power of the EU, Britain is comically powerless in its attempt to seek "better trade deals."
¹Rishi Sunak is reportedly planning to ditch the
digital services tax which was expected to generate about £500m to help pay towards the huge cost of the government’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.
The chancellor, who announced the tax in the budget in March, had said big global technology firms must “pay their fair share of tax”. However, the Mail on Sunday reported that Sunak is preparing to drop the tax following pressure from US companies and politicians.
That's the UK today, weakened by nationalism, and looking ever more stupid with each passing day. There's greater bargaining power in the collective, something which the "United Kingdom" is learning quite a bit late in the day.
All this for the fulfillment of irrational nationalist ideals. The Roman empire failed in part because Rome failed to acknowledge the humanity of the so-called "Barbarians."
Look at Britain now!
